It is 1848 and you are invited to dinner at Withering Depths, the country seat of the Withering family, high on the bleak Yorkshire Moors. Your hostess was to be the Dowager Lady Withering, but just before dinner, the Dowager was found murdered in her bedroom. Fortunately this part of Yorkshire boasts one of the most distinguished detectives in the whole country, Boycott McClue, and he is on hand to help you discover which of the guests gathered here this evening murdered Lady Withering. The suspects are: Lord Selby Withering - You are the 24-year-old son of the murdered woman. In your spare time - which is most of the time - you are trying to establish yourself as a poet. You are foppish and verbose. Sir Clifforde Heath-Clifforde - You are 38 years old and notorious throughout the country as a gambling, womanizing rake. You are a close friend of Lord Withering and are engaged to Emily Lloyd-Bridges. You are louche and debauched. Emily Lloyd-Bridges - As the 18 year old ward of the murdered Lady Withering, you have lived at Withering Depths virtually all your life. You have little experience of the world outside except for what you've read in gothic novels and volumes of romantic poetry. Lady Caroline Mouton - As a close friend of the murdered woman - your husbands served together in the Napoleonic Wars - you are always welcome at Withering Depths. You are a celebrated society hostess in London, sophisticated and elegant. Reverend Adam Bretheren - You're the poor cousin of the Withering family and the Rector of the local parish. You are a frighteningly austere Calvinist utterly dedicated to your calling. Jane Eyrie - You are 26 years old and the governess of Emily Lloyd-Bridges with whom you share a mutual dislike. You are a devoted member of Reverend Bretheren's flock. Extra guests include: (non-suspects) Suzannah Heath-Clifforde - You are Sir Clifforde's younger half-sister. Of your mixed English and Spanish parentage, it is the Spanish side that dominates your looks and character; you don't quite fit in with these cold English aristocrats. Carlos Chickensi - You are a young Spanish Count doing the Grand Tour of Europe. Despite your wealth and privileged background, you are also a dedicated revolutionary.
